New Style and New Search Interface

May 20, 2010
The look and content of the registry is being updated. Any suggestions and comments welcome. There is now a "Google like" search box in the header which can be used anywhere in this site to find coordinate systems, data sources and soon types from the registry. This is also in the menu List Entries. The old listings page is still available here: List Sources. The search interface implemented in javascript so can be used by any other client in their interface - contact dasregistry@sanger.ac.uk for more information. This search is created by the Sanger Institute and is based on the open source Lucene Search engine.

Extra parameters can now be added to the registry web services

May 12, 2010
DAS clients can now add keywords parameter to sources cmds e.g. http://www.dasregistry.org/das/sources?keywords=zebrafish and to the coordinatesystem command http://www.dasregistry.org/das/coordinatesystem?keywords=gorilla. A new search index from the sanger institute is used to return relevant results. The usual other parameters can also be specified to limit the returned results further. The registry has added total, start, end attributes to coordinatesystem response if rows are specified e.g. http://www.dasregistry.org/das/coordinatesystem?keywords=gene&rows=1-10

1.6 specification sources listed in the main lists from the registry in preparation for new 1.6 sources being created

March 19, 2010
As the experimental period for DAS 1.6 is now nearing its end, we expect the 1.6 specification to become official at this years workshop in April. Thus we are adding 1.6 sources to the list of sources at http://www.dasregistry.org/listServices.jsp and the das command http://www.dasregistry.org/das1/sources for other commands now available for listing sources please see documentation here

About

The DAS registration service provides a repository for registry and discovery of DAS (Distributed Annotation System) services. DAS servers are described with meta data like who is providing a server, what DAS commands are being understood by it, what type of data is being provided, etc.

DAS style XML-http as well as SOAP based web services can be used to interact with the DAS registry. This is used by DAS clients like EnsEMBL, SPICE, or Dasty to retrieve the list of available services.

In the future DAS servers like Dazzle or Proserver perhaps can automatically connect to the registration service and register or renew the lease for a DAS service.

Projects

Projects that fund DAS sources can be acknowledged. We are currently in the process in adding support for this also on the DAS client side. I.e. next to a DAS track the logo of the funding project should be displayed.

Validation

The registration server contains a validation mechanism, to make sure that a DAS source is registered properly. When registering a new service an accession code (segment id) needs to be provided. This is used to create a DAS request and validate the response. A service can only be registered if the provided accession code returns a DAS response that contains data.
To prevent the registration service from keeping track of old or even non-functional DAS services, a lease is assigned to each. If the lease is not renewed for a long period, a server might be removed from the registry, after a warning has been submitted to the administrator of the DAS service.
